Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp were back in business on Monday afternoon after a seven hour shutdown that cost CEO Mark Zuckerberg an estimated $7 billion. 

Technicians had attempted a ‘manual reset’ of its servers on Monday afternoon, which appeared to have worked. 

A small team of employees was sent to Facebook’s data center, in Santa Clara, California, to try a ‘manual reset’ of the company’s servers, according to an internal memo obtained by The New York Times. 

Zuckerberg wrote on Facebook: ‘Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger are coming back online now. 

‘Sorry for the disruption today — I know how much you rely on our services to stay connected with the people you care about.’ 

On Monday evening, Facebook tweeted: ‘To the huge community of people and businesses around the world who depend on us: we’re sorry. 

‘We’ve been working hard to restore access to our apps and services and are happy to report they are coming back online now. Thank you for bearing with us.’ 

Facebook’s Chief Technology Officer offered his ‘sincere apologies’ as a global outage of the website, costing the company $50billion and CEO Mark Zuckerberg $7billion and counting. 

A blog post from Facebook Monday said the outage was caused by ‘configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our data centers.’

The company described a ‘cascading effect” on communication between data centers, ‘bringing our services to a halt’.

The changes were believed to have started at 11.50am EST, and the outage was due to error and not a cyber attack.  

It sparked global outages that are detrimental to online businesses and decimate the company’s ad-wielding power. 

At 3.50pm, four hours after the outage began, CTO Mike Schroepfer tweeted: ‘*Sincere* apologies to everyone impacted by outages of Facebook powered services right now. We are experiencing networking issues and teams are working as fast as possible to debug and restore as fast as possible.’

The cause of the outage is believed to be centered around Facebook’s Border Gateway Protocol. 

The BGP allows for the exchange of routing information on the internet and takes people to the websites they want to access by helping them identify them on what is known as a domain naming system – a directory of websites. 

Facebook’s changes included withdrawals which removed its properties from the domain naming system it operates and essentially made it impossible for anyone to connect to the sites because they could no longer be found online. 

As the company scrambled to fix the issue, share prices fell by more than 5 percent, reducing the company’s total value from $967billion on Friday afternoon to $916billion by Monday’s closing bell. Zuckerberg’s stake shrank by $7billion.

A New York Times reporter tweeted that staff at an unspecified Facebook office were unable to use their keycards to gain access to the premises on Monday. It’s unclear if that is related to the outage or not.  

NetBlocks, which tracks internet outages and their impact, estimate the outage has already cost the global economy $160m (£117 million). 

WhatsApp, which is also owned by Facebook, is also down 

Experts say that even once the problem is fixed, it would be a nightmare task rebooting the system because it is so large.  

The scandal-battered company’s shares had dipped by 5 percent on Monday amid the outage and after a whistleblower went public on Sunday night with claims of how it regularly places profit above morals.  

CloudFare’s Chief Technology Office John Graham-Cunningham tweeted on Monday that Facebook accidentally ‘disappeared’ from the internet after making a ‘flurry’ of updates to its BGP – Border Gateway Protocol.   

‘Between 15:50 UTC and 15:52 UTC Facebook and related properties disappeared from the Internet in a flurry of BGP updates,’ he said.  

Facebook does not use CloudFare but it runs one of the world’s largest DNS resolvers. When sites go down because of failures in DNS systems, CloudFare tries to repair them. 

Usman Muzaffar, SVP of engineering at CloudFare, explained to DailyMail.com: ‘Humans access information online through domain names, like facebook.com and DNS converts it into numbers, called an IP address, computers use.

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey appeared to make light of Facebook’s plight this evening. Responding to a post which appeared to show how the facebook.com domain is for sale as a result of the outage, he jokingly asked: ‘How much?’

‘From what we understand of the actual issue —it is a globalized BGP configuration issue. In our experience, these usually are mistakes, not attacks.

‘Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the routing protocol for the Internet. Much like the post office processing mail, BGP picks the most efficient routes for delivering Internet traffic. 

‘Today, the directions for how to get to Facebook’s DNS server’s addresses weren’t available (and seem to still be unavailable). 

‘Without being able to contact the DNS servers, visitors trying to reach a Facebook property, like facebook.com, will not get an answer and so the page won’t load.’

Facebook’s spokesman, Andy Stone, said: ‘We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. 

‘We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.’

Initially, there were reports that AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile were all down too – however those reports stemmed from people being unable to access Facebook-run apps on their mobile devices.  

Kevin King, Director of Communications at Verizon, said there was no outage with the network but that it appeared as though some users were having difficulty accessing certain apps or sites on their Verizon devices. 

‘There is a known outage affecting some social media platforms, and that may cause some customers to believe they are having a problem with network connectivity. Our network is operating normally,’ a spokesman for AT&T said.    

Cyber security specialist Jake Moore said a cyber attack was unlikely.

He told PA: ‘It could well be a human error or a software bug lurking in the shadows but whatever it is Facebook needs to do its best to mitigate the problem of causing more panic about this.

‘The biggest problem is fears over a cyber attack but as we saw from Fastly in the summer I would hedge my bets on that not being the case as we’re talking about one of the biggest companies in the world, but there’s always a chance.’

Adam Leon Smith, of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT and a software testing expert, said: ‘The outage is caused by changes made to the Facebook network infrastructure. Many of the recent high-profile outages have been caused by similar network level events.

‘It is reported by unidentified Facebook sources on Reddit that the network changes have also prevented engineers from remotely connecting to resolve the issues, delaying resolution.

‘Notably, many organizations now define their physical infrastructure as code, but most do not apply the same level of testing rigor when they change that code, as they would when changing their core business logic.’  

Brooke Erin Duffy, , a professor of communications at Cornell University, told The New York Times: ‘Today’s outage brought our reliance on Facebook — and its properties like WhatsApp and Instagram — into sharp relief.

‘The abruptness of today’s outage highlights the staggering level of precarity that structures our increasingly digitally mediated work economy.’ 

While businesses that rely on Facebook panicked, Twitter rejoiced in a surge in traffic. 

‘Hello literally everyone’ was the tongue-in-cheek message from Twitter tonight as it took a lighthearted approach to its rival Facebook suffering a worldwide outage.  

Social media users meanwhile flocked to Twitter to share memes about Facebook being down.

Britney Spears reportedly ‘burst into tears’ on Wednesday after she learned that her father Jamie has been suspended as the conservator of her $60 million estate after 13 years. 

The pop star celebrated the news by sharing an Instagram post showing her flying a prop plane for the first time. In the post symbolic of her newfound freedom, Britney is recorded taking her first flying lesson. 

A second video captures the view as the small plane flies over a strip of green land cutting through blue waters which was followed by an unsteady photo of palm trees.

‘Britney burst into tears upon hearing the judge’s decision,’ an anonymous source told Page Six. ‘For the longest time, she had begun to think that she would never see the day that her father’s domineering control over every single aspect of her life would end, but it finally happened.’

On Wednesday, a Los Angeles judge kicked Jamie off the conservatorship that’s been controlling Britney’s personal life and $60 million fortune for the past 13 years.  

Britney, 39, was not in attendance at the hearing where a judge heard arguments for ending the conservatorship. Both of her parents Jamie and Lynn attended virtually via Zoom

It’s a huge victory for the 39-year-old singer in her long battle to regain control of her personal and financial affairs.

But full freedom won’t be immediate. While LA Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny ordered Jamie to step down today, she also appointed a temporary replacement conservator, accountant John Zabel.

Zabel – a Certified Public Accountant will take over Britney’s financial affairs until the court decides she’s ready to look after herself again and the conservatorship can be completely terminated – which could happen in just a few months.

In making her ruling, Judge Penny told the court, ‘I do believe that the suspension of James Spears is in the best instants of Ms. Spears.’

She added that pleadings by Britney’s legal team, ‘reflect a toxic environment that requires the suspension of Mr. Spears.’ 

Britney’s lawyer Mathew Rosengart, addressed her fans, the Britney Army, thanking them for their adamant support of the pop star. 

‘Today’s a great day. It’s a great day for Britney Spears and it’s a great day for justice. And there’s definitely something to celebrate. But it’s also a solemn day. Britney Spears has been faced with a decade-long nightmare orchestrated by her father and others,’ Rosengart during a news conferencing following Wednesday’s hearing.  

‘I’m so proud of her for her courage, her strength… and she’s so pleased and so thankful to all of you,’ he said addressing the public. 

‘I think the support of the Free Britney movement has been instrumental.’ 

Rosengart noted that while today’s ruling was a ‘substantial step toward (Britney’s) freedom’ there are still further allegations of Britney’s mistreatment that are being investigated by state and federal authorities.  

Outside the court in downtown LA today, dozens of #FreeBritney supporters – filmed by an army of TV cameramen and photographers – gathered, waving banners saying ‘Stop the abuse’, and chanting ‘Free Britney’ and ‘Jamie for jail’.

And the fans of the embattled stars also signed a giant pink card – bearing the single word ‘Love’ in white – for their idol.

Rosengart was seeking a suspension, rather than a termination of the conservatorship, to keep Jamie from receiving a settlement and to allow an investigation into his time as Britney’s conservator. 

The hearing came hours after Britney’s lawyer called her father ‘a reported alcoholic and gambling addict’ in new legal documents.

Jamie blasted Zabel’s nomination, calling him a ‘layperson’ not qualified to supervise the finances of an internationally renowned entertainer like Britney.

He claimed Zabel had been swindled out of $1 million in a bogus real estate scam and asked, if he cannot protect his own money how is he going to look after Britney’s $60 million?

But Britney’s attorney, Mathew Rosengart – who nominated Zabel for the job – hit back in his own court filing, saying Zabel is a ‘nationally-recognized CPA (certified public accountant)…..in stark contrast to Mr. Spears, a reported alcoholic and gambling addict with zero financial background or experience in financial matters, who previously filed for bankruptcy and has a domestic violence restraining order currently in effect against him.’

Rosengart also weighed in on reports that the FBI has launched an investigation into claims in a New York Times documentary that Jamie hired a security firm to monitor and record Britney’s communications and spy on what went on in her bedroom, without her knowledge or consent.

Jamie has claimed that Britney knew about the surveillance at her home in California where both parties must consent to their conversation being recorded.

But Rosengart – who has accused Jamie of mismanaging Britney’s finances and profiting from the conservatorship – lashed out in a court filing Monday, saying, ‘Mr. Spears has crossed unfathomable lines,

‘While they are not evidence, the allegations warrant serious investigation, certainly by Ms. Spears as, among other things, California is a ‘two-party’ consent state.’

‘Placing a listening device in Britney’s bedroom would be particularly inexcusable and disgraceful, and corroborates so much of her compelling, poignant testimony.

‘These actions must be fully and aggressively investigated.’

Rosengart followed up his court filing with a statement condemning the surveillance, saying, ‘Unauthorized recording or monitoring of Britney’s private communications…..represent an unconscionable and disgraceful violation of her privacy rights and a striking example of the deprivation of her civil liberties.’

The pop star has been under a conservatorship since she suffered a mental health breakdown in 2008. She’s seen in this infamous 2007 photo attacking paparazzi with an umbrella 

Another hearing to address the request to terminate Britney’s conservatorship completely is scheduled for November 12. 

For more than a year, Britney has been calling for her father to be fired as her conservator and for an end to the conservatorship which she’s called ‘abusive.’

She has said that she’s ‘afraid ‘ of her dad and declared that she would not perform again until he was no longer in charge of the conservatorship he’s been overseeing since her much-publicized breakdown in 2008.

One of her most heart-wrenching revelations came during a tearful phone appearance at Judge Penny’s court last June when she said that she wanted to have a baby with her fiancé, personal trainer Sam Asghari, but the strict conservatorship wouldn’t allow her to remove her IUD birth control.

‘I feel ganged up on and bullied and alone,’ Britney told the court during that emotional statement. ‘I just want my life back.’

She also told the judge that she felt ‘enslaved’ by her dad, whom she, added, ‘should be in jail.’

Last year, at her father’s request, the conservatorship (the one dealing with Britney’s personal affairs, not the conservatorship controlling her finances) was temporarily transferred from Jamie to her long-time caregiver Jodi Montgomery.

While he blamed his stepping down on health issues, Jamie’s decision came amid accusations that he had gotten into an altercation with Britney’s then 14 year-old son Sean Preston, now 16.

Kevin Federline – Britney’s ex and the father of Sean and his brother Jayden James, 15 – made a police report and took out a restraining order against his former father-in-law after the incident in which, reportedly, a ‘very angry’ Jamie broke down the door of a room Sean had locked himself in and ‘shook’ the frightened teen.

Britney was said to be furious over what happened and worried that the incident could jeopardize the joint custody agreement she has with Federline that already gives him a much larger percentage of time with the boys than she has.

The Spears family have been torn apart by fights over the pop singer’s career and fortune. Last year, she began the legal process to remove him from handling her personal affairs and in June testified in court, but her request was denied.

But the family resentment exploded this summer when Britney addressed a court and pleaded to end the arrangement, claiming that she had been taken advantage of by her entire family. 

Jamie argued in court in early August that he should not be removed but days later filed a petition for the conservatorship to come to an end.  

Rosengart, said at the time it was ‘a vindication for Britney’.

‘We are pleased that Mr. Spears and his lawyer have today conceded in a filing that he must be removed,’ he said. ‘It is vindication for Britney.’   

Meanwhile Britney’s former best friend Sean Phillips has said the pop star is itching to return to performing after refusing to appear on stage until the conservatorship was ended. 

‘She’s a performer at heart’, he said. ‘She’s a genius at performing, she’s so good at what she does, she does it so effortlessly and I know that’s what she loves to do.

‘But I do believe that she’s doing the right thing, she needs to have control over her own career and I would do the same thing if I was her with that talent. So I would hold out until I knew I had complete control of it.’ 

Philips said he thought Spears’ had coped well with ‘strange… external influences’ and added he was ‘proud of her for what she’s doing now and trying to take control of what’s going on.

‘I hope Britney gets control of her life, she gets confidence in controlling her career and her family. Somehow, even if it’s down the road, that’s what I hope happens.’

Jamie, 68, filed legal documents trying to challenge the person Rosengart has chosen to replace him to oversee Britney’s estate – according to TMZ – CPA John Zabel who has an ‘impeccable record of serving in positions of trust.’

Despite Zabel also being described as a ‘highly-esteemed, nationally-recognized, and an award-winning CPA,’ Britney’s father has been trying to challenge the appointment. 

However, Rosengart has hit back at Jamie’s concerns, saying he has ‘zero financial background or experience in financial matters, who previously filed for bankruptcy and has a Domestic Violence Restraining Order currently in effect against him.’

The legal documents filed by Rosengart are also said to mention the recent allegations that Jamie engineered secret recordings in Britney’s bedroom. 

Meanwhile TMZ also reported Tuesday that renowned psychiatrist Dr. Charles Sophy was approached by Britney’s team to see if she was being over-medicated. 

Sophy claimed that there was a concern Britney was being ‘excessively pumped full of drugs’ to the point where she was ‘not able to clearly speak for herself.’ 

However, Sophy said he declined the opportunity to evaluate her.

Meanwhile, on Monday it was reported that Britney’s father Jamie could be investigated by the FBI after it was claimed that he hired a security company to monitor his daughter’s communications  – including what went on in her bedroom – without her knowledge or consent.

Deadline reported that the FBI are looking into whether the law was broken, with Jamie insisting his daughter knew of the surveillance arrangements.

‘Mr. Spears has crossed unfathomable lines,’ said the singer’s lawyer in a court filing on Monday ahead of Wednesday’s hearing on the conservatorship.

‘While they are not evidence, the allegations warrant serious investigation, certainly by Ms. Spears as, among other things, California is a ‘two-party’ consent state.’

His furious remarks were a reference to a New York Times documentary released on Hulu on Friday detailing the surveillance claims. 

Alex Vlasov, a former employee of Black Box Security, told The New York Times in a new documentary that the 39-year-old’s phone calls and messages were secretly recorded as part of her 13-year conservatorship, overseen by her father. 

Rosengart further told the paper that the allegations made by Vlasov warranted urgent inquiry.

He said it was yet further evidence of the mistreatment of the singer, who on June 23 told the court she was forced to have birth control implants; was forbidden from driving her car; and had no say in her most basic life decisions. 

‘Placing a listening device in Britney’s bedroom would be particularly inexcusable and disgraceful, and corroborates so much of her compelling, poignant testimony.

‘These actions must be fully and aggressively investigated.’

He said in Monday’s court documents that he intends to depose the 69-year-old, and that if he plead the Fifth Amendment it would be damning. 

It is unclear whether the court which managed the conservatorship had approved the recordings.

Britney has not commented on the specific allegations that she was secretly recorded, but in an Instagram post on Monday said that the documentary, Controlling Britney Spears, had many factual errors.

But, while neighbors expressed shock at this latest twist in the spiraling Murdaugh saga, one long-time acquaintance told DailyMail.com that Smith had been talking of his potential involvement in the crime when out in Walterboro last week.

According to Henry Vandermark, who has known the man he described as ‘straight-dealing’ and ‘friendly,’ for more than a decade, Smith was blasé when he told him that cops had visited his Walterboro home last week and informed him that he was a suspect in the bizarre roadside shooting.

According to Vandermark, Smith didn’t seem at all worried or concerned about the development. He said: ‘It didn’t seem to bother him at all.’

Despite Smith’s admission, Vandermark said that he ‘couldn’t believe it’ when he saw that his long-time acquaintance had been arrested Tuesday.

In fact, investigators had been closing in on the man whom Murdaugh hired to shoot him while attorneys for Murdaugh were still publicly peddling the tale of a random roadside ambush even offering more ‘facts’ given by their client in a bid to shore up his story.

Smith appeared disheveled and disoriented when he appeared for his bond hearing at Hampton County Detention Center, at 9am Thursday.

The judge broke down each of Smith’s charges and set bail accordingly: on the charge of pointing a firearm at a person bond was set at $5,000; on the insurance and misrepresentation $10,000; on conspiracy, $5,000; on assisting a person committing suicide, $15,000 and on assault and battery bond was $20,000.

Murdaugh is said to have called 911 from the side of Old Salkehatchie Road shortly after 1pm on Saturday, September 4.

By the time law enforcement arrived, he was already being transported to hospital in Savannah suffering from what South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has consistently described as a ‘superficial’ gunshot wound to the head.

Attorneys for Murdaugh have insisted that his injuries were far more serious, with lawyer Jim Griffin claiming that his client had ‘an entry and exit wound…fractured skull and minor brain bleed.’

Multiple casings were found on the scene near the Mercedes SUV being driven by Murdaugh that day and once owned by his wife, Maggie.

On Wednesday neighbors near Smith’s home in Walterboro, South Carolina told DailyMail.com that as Griffin made his claims members of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) were ‘crawling all over the place.’

One who asked not to be named recalled: ‘There were cars all round there and members of SLED crawling all over the place last week.’

In fact, SLED executed multiple search warrants on Smith’s home on September 7, just three days after Murdaugh reported the roadside shooting. 

And one day after Murdaugh, who has been accused of embezzling millions from his family law firm, issued a public statement in which he admitted to opioid addiction and said he was entering rehab.

One of Smith’s neighbors said: ‘It’s a total shock to wake up to a text saying, ‘Have you heard about your neighbor…?’ and then to learn this.

Smith and Murdaugh are distant relatives though the men are understood to have first met when Murdaugh represented Smith in a minor traffic offense in 2013.

Murdaugh only changed his story on Monday when he was visited by his attorneys Dick Harpootlian and Griffin at an out of state rehab center.

According to Harpootlian, it was the first time either of them had spoken to their client when he was not high on opioids, that he knew that what he had done was wrong and that he was in a ‘dark, dark place’ when he hatched the bizarre plot.

Murdaugh gave a statement to SLED admitting to the scheme, September 13. 

According to Harpootlian he did not want to distract detectives investigating the murders of Maggie and Paul with the staged incident.
